Free PPP Configurations

TCP/IP Networking via MacTCP 2.0.6 and MacPPP 1.0.x or FreePPP 1.0.5

TCP/IP Networking via MacTCP 2.0.6 and FreePPP 2.5v2

Configuring Free PPP 2.5v2

  1. Once you have installed the FreePPP software and restarted your machine, you will notice an telephone icon on the menu bar at the top right corner of your screen next to the system clock. This icon is an access point to your FreePPP dialer and Setup interface

  2. Click on the PPP dialer icon on your menu bar and select ‘Open FreePPP Setup’.

  3. The ‘FreePPP Setup’ window should now be open. If the full window is not visible, select the small blue arrow at the bottom left of the window to expand the window downward to full view.

  4. You will see three tabs: ‘General’, ‘Accounts’, ‘Locations’. Select the ‘Accounts’ tab.

  5. Click on the ‘New’ button. This will open another window prompting you for information to generate a dialer profile.

  6. From the ‘Account’ tab interface, enter the ‘Server Name:’ Pioneer Internet

  7. On the following line enter your local access ‘Phone Number:’ 123-4567

  8. From the Connect: drop-down menu in the middle of the window, select the ‘Directly’ option.

  9. At the next dialog entry box enter your ‘User name:’ johndoe

  10. In the following box enter your ‘Password:’ abc123

  11. Select the ‘Connection’ tab from the row of tabs at the top of the window.

  12. Verify that the ‘Port Speed:’, ‘Flow Control:’, and ‘Modem init string:’ match the settings as specified by your particular modem’s manufacturer or vendor.

  13. Click the ‘OK’ button. Your FreePPP Setup should now be conifgured and ready for testing.

Connect to the Internet!

  1. You’re almost there…if you have confirmed each of the above steps, you should be ready to give it a test run. You may dial by clicking once on the ‘Connect’ button in the ‘FreePPP Setup’ window. (Just make sure that the modem and the phone line are ready to dial out).

  2. A connection status window should overlay the desktop and show you the stages of your connection. Beginning with the initialization of your modem…dialing…making some "odd" sounds as the modems converse…feeding your login information…establishing communication…and finalizing with the ‘Successful’ message. You will notice that dialer icon is animated, the phone is smiling and the ‘Connect’ button has changed to ‘Disconnect’. If so, you are successfully dialed onto the Internet.

  3. Now your TCP/IP network connection is established and from here you can launch your Internet software, be it a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or your E-mail software such as Eudora Mail, and cruise the ‘Net to your heart’s content.

Oh, one more note…with FreePPP 2.5v2 and MacTCP 2.0.6 you have the added option of convenience of initiating your dialup connection by merely launching your network client/application (i.e. Netscape Navigator). Upon startup your software should request a network connection and initiate the dial/logon sequence automatically. This option is up to you and your software, but it certainly does make things swifter and more convenient in many cases
